About the Externship Program
VCA Animal Hospitals range in size from large 24-hour care facilities with emergency services and board-certified specialists to 3 doctor community practices.  We recommend extern time blocks lasting between 2-6 weeks.

Our Externship Program allows you to:

• Observe office calls with doctors
• Assist with treatments, scrub in as assistant in surgery
• Observe special procedures (e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound...)
• Assist with client communication (follow your own case)
• Give a medical presentation in your area of special interest

We have over 225 hospital locations to choose from and 17 hospitals that have Internship programs focusing on Small Animal Surgery/Internal Medicine and Emergency Critical Care.
